A little town north of Jackson and across from the Jackson Hole Airport, Kelly was named for rancher and sawmill industrialist Bill Kelly, and was once known as Grovont or Gros Ventre. It is technically a part of the Grand Teton National Park.
On the eastern border of Grand Teton National Park, Kelly is a small village with little over 180 year-round residents. Before continuing into the Gros Ventre Mountains or stopping to see animals along Antelope Flats Road, this is an excellent area to stop for a sandwich, coffee, or drink while enjoying the breathtaking views of the Teton Range. Visitors can check out Slide Lake, which was formed in 1925 when 50 million tons of rock and debris slid off Sheep Mountain, damming the Gros Ventre River, leaving behind giant boulders.
It’s about 14 miles or about a 20-minute drive to Kelly from Jackson. Along the way, visitors can watch for elk, coyotes, moose, elk, deer and other wildlife in the National Elk Refuge bordering US Highway 189/US 191 North.
