Mountain Standard Realty

05/1/26

As the Tetons shake off winter and the valley begins to green up, spring brings one of the most dynamic and important times of year in Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. Bears are emerging from hibernation, moose are calving, elk and deer are migrating, and animals across the ecosystem are more active than at any other time of the year. For those who live here, or are considering making it home, this season is a powerful reminder that life in the Tetons comes with both incredible access to nature and a shared responsibility to respect it. Whether you're a new homeowner, a second-home owner, or simply visiting and exploring the area, here’s what to know about staying safe while coexisting with wildlife this spring.

Why Spring Matters

May marks peak wildlife activity. After a long winter, animals are hungry, can be protective, and can travel through residential areas as they follow natural migration routes.

  • Bears are emerging and actively searching for food after hibernation

  • Moose are giving birth to their offspring, and can be protective of their space

  • Elk and deer are migrating, often crossing roads and neighborhoods

It’s a beautiful time of year, but also one that requires heightened wildlife awareness!

For Homeowners: Living Responsibly in Wildlife Habitat

Owning property in the Tetons means you’re part of an ecosystem, not separate from it. Small habits go a long way in keeping both people and animals safe. So what can you do?

Secure all attractants Garbage, compost, pet food, and even grills can draw in wildlife, especially bears. Use bear-resistant trash cans and store items securely.

Be mindful with landscaping Fruit trees, bird feeders, and lush gardens can unintentionally attract animals. Consider wildlife-friendly alternatives or seasonal adjustments.

Keep pets under control Dogs can provoke wildlife encounters, especially with moose or bears. Keep pets leashed or supervised, particularly during early morning and evening hours.

Slow down in neighborhoods Wildlife frequently moves through residential areas this time of year. Drive cautiously, especially at dawn and dusk.

For Visitors: Respecting Wildlife While Exploring

If you're visiting Jackson Hole or Teton Valley, chances are wildlife is high on your list! Seeing animals in their natural habitat is unforgettable. Here’s a few things to remember when looking for wildlife:

Give animals space Stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from moose, elk, and other wildlife. If an animal changes behavior because of you, you’re too close!

Never feed wildlife Feeding animals is dangerous and illegal. It conditions them to associate humans with food, often leading to future conflicts.

Stay aware on trails Make noise while hiking, especially in wooded areas or near water where visibility is limited. Carry bear spray and know how to use it!

Observe, don’t approach Spring is calving season. Mothers can be protective, and even typically calm animals like moose can become irritated when their space is encroached upon.

A Lifestyle Rooted in Respect

One of the reasons people are drawn to the Tetons is the opportunity to live immersed in nature. It’s part of what makes this place so special and so different from other resort markets.

For homeowners, it’s about daily awareness and stewardship. For visitors, it’s about experiencing the wild responsibly. For those considering buying here, it’s about embracing a lifestyle that values coexistence as much as it does scenery.

Thinking About Making the Tetons Home?

Spring offers a unique window into what it truly means to live here. It’s not just about views and access. It’s about understanding the rhythms of the land and the wildlife that call it home.
